About bebo

bebo is social networking website launched in 2005. It is owned and operated by its founder Michael Brich who took over from Criterion Capital Partners in July 2013.


Bebo was founded by Michael and Xochi Birch in January 2005 at their home in San Francisco. The web site name was bought by the founders, and the backronym "Blog Early, Blog Often" was invented on answer the question of what the name meant. Each bebo user receives a profile, which must include two specific modules: a comment section where other users can leave a message, and a list of the user's friends. Users can select from many more modules to add. By default, when an account created the profile is private, which limits access to friends specifically added.

On February 22, 2007, Bebo Authors, also known as Bebo Books, was launched. On this section of the site, authors can upload chapters of their books and also get them reviewed with a certian module. On July 10, 2007, the "Group" module was added to pages. This enable people to view groups which were previously joined to a school and were also viewable only to school members.

Bebo also gave an option on convert existing Authors or Brands to Groups. This conversion takes upto 24 hours as the profile must be manually changed by a member of Bebo staff. A new service called Bebo Chat, was launched with several other updates in 2011, which allows users to chat to other users. using a Meebo chat plugin, but with Bebo branding. Users can also update their 'Saying' and show their avilability status,as well as have access to other links to Bebo's pages, and special offers. 

Bebo is known to run on servers running the Resin Server whilst making use of the Oracle Database system. it is estimated that Bebo has somewere between 5000 and 8000 phantom4 servers provided by Rackeble system and has over 100TB of disk space across all of  their servers. The website, at its height of popularity, overtook Myspace to become the most widely used social network in United Kingdom, eventually registering atleast 10.7 million unique users. 

To a certain extent, Bebo is used for roleplaying  character from various televison programes, movies and novels. These Bebo character profiles are created and maintained by individuals, similar to a virtual world profile. Examples of the more common fictional chronicles mimicked on the site include Strange, The Twilight Saga, The Vampire Diaries, One Tree Hill, Supernatural, Harry Potter, James Bond, Merlin, Gor, Buffy the vampire slayer, Torchwood and Doctor who.                         

About Twitter

Twitter is an online social networking service and microblogging service that enables its users to send and read text-based messages of up to 140 characters, known as "Twitter".


Twitter was created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey and by July, the social networking site was launched.
The service rapidly gained worldwide popularity, with over 500 million registerd users as of 2012, generating over 340 million twittes daily and handling over 1.6 billion search queries per day.

Tweets are publicly visible by default, but senders can restrict message delivery to just their followers. users can tweet via the Twitter website, compatible extrenal applications (such as for smartphones), or by short message service (SMS) available in certain countries.
Users may subscribe to other user's tweets - this is known as following and subscribe are known as tweets or followers, a portmanteau of Twitter and peeps. The users can also check the people who are un-subscribing them on Twitter via various services.

Twitter allows users to upload their profile their mobile phone either by text messaging or by apps released for certian smartphones and tablets. Users can group post together by topic or type by use of hashtags-words or phrases perfixed with a "#" sign. Similarly, the "@" sign folowed by a user names is used for replaying or mentioning to others users. On April 30, 2009, Twitter adjusted its web interface, adding a search bar and a slidebar of "trending topices" the most common phrases appearing in message. Biz stone explains that all messages are instantly indexed  and that "with this newly launched feature, Twitter has become something unexpectedly important - adiscovery engine for finging out what is happning right now".

In late 2009, the "Twitter lists" feature was added, making is possible for users to follow (as well as mentioned reply to) ad hoc lists of authors instead of individual authors. The tweets were set to a 140 - character limit for compatibility with SMS messaging, introducing the shorthand nation and slang commonly used in SMS messages.

There are numerous tools for adding content, monitoring content and conversations including Telly (video sharing, old name is Twitvid), Tweet Deck, Salesforce.com, Hot suite, and Twitterfeed. Twitter has mobile apps for iphone, ipad, Android, Windows phone, Blackberry, and Nokia S40. There is also version of the website for mobile devices, SMS and MMS service.

In March 2012, Twitter became available in Arabic, Farsi, Hebrew and Urdu, the first right to left language version for the site. About 13,000 volunteers helped with translating the menu options. In August 2012, beta support for Basque, Czech and Greek was added, making the site available in 33 different languages.

About Linkedin

Linkedin is a social networking website for people in professional occupations. Founded in December 2002 and launched on May 5, 2003, it is mainly used for professional networking. As of June 2013, Linked in reports more than 225 million acuired users in more than 200 countries and territories. Ok let's talk little bit about Linkedin and its start.


Linkedin's CEO is Jeff Weiner, previously a Yahoo! Inc. executive. The company was founded by Reid Hoffman and founding team members from Paypal and Socialnet.com (Allen Blue, Eric Ly, Jean-Luc Vaillant, Lee Hower, Konstantin Guericke,Stephen Beitzel, David Eves, Ian McNish, Yan Pujante and chris Saccheri). One purpos of the site is to allow registerd users to maintain a list of contact details of people with  whom they have some level of relationship,called connections. Users can invite anyone (whether a site user or not) to become a connection. However, if the invitee selects "I'dont know" or "Spam", this count against the inviter. I fthe inviter gets too many of such responses, the account may be restricted or closed.

The feature Linkedin Answers, allowed users to ask questions for the community to answer. This feature was free, and the main difference from the letter was that questions are potentially more business oriented, and the identity of the people asking and answering questions is know.

In October 2008, Linkedin enabled an "applications platform" that allows other online services to be embedded within a member's profile page. Among the tinitial application were an Amazon Reading list that allows linkedin menbers to display books they are reading, a connection to Tripit, and a six Apart, Wordpress and Typepad application that allows members to display their latest blog postings within their Linkedin Profile.

A mobile version of the site was launched in February 2008, which gives access to a reduced feature set over  a mobile phone. Linkedin allows research companies with wich they may be interested  in working.
When typing the same of a given company in the search box, statistics about the company are provided. In July 2011, Linkedin launched a new feature allowing companies to include an "Apply with linkedin" button on job listing pages. The new pluging will allow potential employees to apply for positions their linedin profiles as resums.

About Facebook

Facebook is online social networking service, whose name from the colloquial name for the book given to students at the start of the academic year by some university administrations in the United States to help student get to know each other.


It was founded in February 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg with his college roommates and fellow Harvard University students Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes.
Users must register befor using this site, after which they may creat a personal profile, add other users as friends, and exchange messages and many more, including automatic notifications when they update their profile. Additionally, users may join common-interest user groups,orgnaized by workplace, School or College, or other characteristics, and categorize their friends into lists such as "People from work" or "close Friends".  
Users can creat profiles with photos, lists of personal interests, contact information, and other personal information anything users want. User communicate with friends and other users through private or public messages and a chat feature. They can also creat and join interest groups and "Like pages" (Called "Fan Pages" until April 19,2010), some of which are maintained by organizations as a mean of advertising. The user page is set up in a minimal fashion with blue as the main color. This was done because Zuckerburg is red - green colorblind. On September 6, 2006, a news feed was announced,which appears on every user's 
homepage and highlights information including profile changes, upcoming events, and birthdays of the user's friends. 
One of the most popular applications on facebook is the photo application.where users can upload albums and photos. Facebook allows users to upload an unlimited number of photos, compared with other image hosting services such as Photobucket and Flickr, which apply limits to the number of photos that a user is allowed to upload. Privacy settings can be set for individual albums, limiting the group of users that can see an album. On June 7, 2012, Facebook launched its App center to its users. It will help the users in finding games and other applications with case. 

Facebook launched Gifts on February 8, 2007, which allows users to send vertuel gifts to their friends that appear on the recipient's profile. Gift cost $1.00 each to purchase and a personlized message can be attache to each gift. The like button is a socia networking feature, allowing users to express their application of content such as status updates, comments, photos, and advertisments. 

Since April 2011, Facebook users have had the ability to make live voice calls via facebook chat, allowing   users to chat with others from allover the world. This feature, which is provided free through mobile's new bobsled service, lets the user add voice to the current Facebook chat as well as leave voice message on Facebook. 
On July 6,2011, Facebook launched its voice calling service using Skype as its technology partner.

About Google +

Google + (Plus) is a Multilingual Social Networking and identity service woned and operated by google inc. It is the second largest networking site in the world. It has approximately 359 million active users. As of May 2013, It had a total of 500Million registerd users, of whom 235 million are active in a given month.


Google Launched the Google + service as an "field test" on June 28, 2011, but soon suspended early invites due to an "insane demand" for few accounts. On August 6, each Google + member had 150 invitations to giveout until September 20, every one 18 years of age or older without the need for an invititation. Google + is available as a website and on mobile devices. In the "stream", this occupies the middle of three colums of the page, users see updates from those in their Circles. There is an input box which allows users to enter a post.

Along with the text entry field there are icons to upload and share photos and videos. "Circles" enable users to organize people into groups for sharing across various Google Products and services. Although other users may be able to view a list of people in a user's collection of Circles, they cannot view the name of those Circles. "Hangouts" are places used to faciliate group video chat (with a maximum of 10 people participating in a single Hangout at any point in time).

Only Google + users can join the "Hangout" if they happen to possess the unique URL of the Hangout. "Messanger" is a feature  available to Android, iphone, and SMS devices for communicating through instant
messaging within Circles. "Instant Upload" is specific to mobile devices, it stores photos or videos in a private album for sharing later.

"Data Liberation" option provides the ability to download one's from Google +.Search in Google + allows users to search for content within Google +.  Users type what they're looking for into the Google + search box, and Google will return relevant people and post, as well as popular content from around the web.

Ripples, introduced on October 27, 2011, is a visualisation tool, showing how resharing activity happens regarding a Public post.
